Unsearchable Depths-Trusting God When You Don’t Understand

The secret things belong to the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. Deut. 29:29

“There are depths and mysteries in divine providence that we must acknowledge to be unsearchable. Let us not then censure what we cannot understand, what we cannot fathom. Is it strange that incomprehensible wisdom should do incomprehensible things? We should not therefore inquire too curiously into the secrets of His providence, nor determine anything, rashly concerning it, which is not revealed to us. We are well assured that He made the world; and yet there are many questions about the works of creation that may puzzle the wisest and most diligent enquirer. So in the government of the world, there are many things above our reach, and yet we may be assured that an unerring wisdom governs all. We are so ignorant and shortsighted, and the designs of God are so far beyond us, and the means He uses are often so various and their connection with His design so much concealed from our weak eyes, that no wonder if we are often at a loss; especially when all the particulars of His works of providence that make up the beauty of the whole are wonderfully interwoven together so that it is not strange if we comprehend not the reasons of all events and discern not that wisdom and righteousness of God as to many particulars, while yet we believe Him to be wise, and holy in all His ways, and righteousness in all His works.” —John Shower
